Nexor's April 2026 dispatch identifies Nyos as a village situated on the lower slopes near the shore of Lake Nyos in Cameroon. According to the broadcast, nearly all of the settlement's roughly 1,000 residents perished in the 1986 eruption, making it among the most devastated communities in the event that the dispatch records as killing 1,746 people in total.
